Flirting with God

According to the online Oxford dictionary, to flirt means to “behave as though sexually attracted to someone but playfully rather than with serious intentions”. The Scriptures make us understand that we are “members of his body, of his flesh and of his bones” (Ephesians 5:30). A few verses before verse 30 had established the relationship between Christ and the church using the marriage between a man and his maiden as a case in point. (please see Ephesians 5:22–30). If we are members of his body, why then do we seem to love Him only with empty words lifting up “holy hands”? We may just have been flirting with God.

Matthew 15:7–9 (TPT): Frauds and hypocrites! Isaiah described you perfectly when he said: These people honour me only with their words, for their hearts are far so very distant from me. They pretend to worship me, but their worship is nothing more than the empty traditions of men.

Jesus was quoting the book of Isaiah 29:13 as he rebuked the scribes and Pharisees for their empty worship and tradition-based doctrines. In other words, He was rebuking their double-standard lives. It seems to me that this verse of scripture with its corresponding witnesses correlate with some of the happenings in our local church today. We say “I love you Lord” but do we really mean it?

Jesus gave His life to have you and when you said yes to Him, it actually did mean that you also gave your life so you could have Him. Now that’s Love! If you are for Him, then be for Him. Don’t check the bible about his promises concerning you only to take your cues from reading zodiac signs. Don’t tell God you will wait on Him only to cut corners and then come to church to testify of a pseudo-miracle you anxiously worked claiming it was God who did it.

Joshua 24:14–15 (AMP): Now, therefore, [reverently] fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and in truth; put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the [Euphrates] River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Just in case you didn’t know, God has emotions (and no, He is not a cry-baby). When He loves, He gives His life (as proven in scriptures). If He truly is your Lord and Saviour, then surrender. Don’t tell Him you love him only to lust after the benefits of being with him. You are not a spiritual harlot, you are a Christian! Serving/worshipping God takes being deliberate.

The double-minded flirt with God. They want him but they love to carelessly revel in the quagmire of the world’s filth disguised as wealth in various manifolds. Stop being a modern-day pharisee. Love not in words but in deed and in truth! Awake unto righteousness! Repent! Return to your first love.
